Can I Take a Rental Car Abroad?

At Fairview Vehicle Hire, Our vehicles can be taken outside of mainland Great Britain into the EU with prior approval.

To arrange this, simply contact us by email or phone and provide details about your trip, such as locations, date and your preferred vehicle type. We’ll then check with our insurers to get a price for EU cover and provide you with a quote.

Once everything has been approved by us, you can drive your hire car to France, Germany or anywhere in the EU. We offer a wide range of vehicles suitable for travelling abroad, from family-sized cars to premium options if you want to travel in style.

What Age Do You Have to Be to Drive a Rental Car Abroad?

If you’re looking for a car hire to take abroad from the UK, we ask that drivers be between the ages of 23 and 69. You should have held a valid driving license for at least two years. For younger drivers below 25, we apply a surplus charge. This which helps us maintain the safety of both the vehicle and the passengers.

Key Documents When Taking a Rental Car to Europe

  • Valid driving license (full, not provisional)
  • Passport (valid for at least three months after your planned departure)
  • VE103 vehicle on hire certificate (for hired or leased vehicles)
  • Rental car documentation with insurance details
